Hi Joseph,
I’m struggling with transitioning from mid-career HR to mid-career Communications – I definitely don’t want to start from the beginning as this would mean taking a financial hit. I did both HR and Comms in my previous role, but am finding it difficult to transition solely into Comms.
Hoping your podcast will help me!
Thanks very much. I look forward to it.
Farah, I think this topic of trying to make a lateral transition without backtracking too much is a really important one, and a concern that comes up a lot. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’ll definitely try to cover this in the podcast.
I’m a software engineer but I’d like to become more of a business man, involved in entrepreneurship and management.
I’ve even done an Exec MBA in Cambridge and I’m starting a new company with a class mate, but I’m still coding like crazy because I’m the CTO and that is my main skill.
Coding is kind of fun but I would really like to move on and do something else. I cannot find jobs that allow me to do that because my curriculum just shows I’m good at coding…
Also a little dream in the drawer is to work with food one day. Maybe a restaurant or something like that. Cannot see how to do that!
Thanks
Marco, thanks so much for sharing your situation and story! I think you’ll really enjoy the podcast, and be sure to listen to Episode 5, where I’ll be featuring a guy who shifted from tech into building a portfolio career for himself that allowed him to combine his various skills & interests. Our first episode also features someone who shifted into the food industry–pursuing a dream of hers too!
Hello. I am a full-time pharmaceutical sales rep with extensive experience (20 years) in sales and marketing communications (brand promotion) for several leading pharmaceutical manufacturers. I have a part-time business doing career consulting and life coaching. I have my MBA in marketing and starting a certification program in Coaching but never finished due to time constraints with current full-time job. I am reduced to limiting my ability to work with clients in my coaching practice due to demands of full time job.
I am passionate about career coaching/consulting and desire to work in the higher education setting (Career Center – MBA Students) or any setting where I can utilize these skills. As I apply for positions as Career Counselor I have been bypassed because I don’t have a Counselling Degree.
Not willing to go back to school at this point. I know I can excel in the position! Advice!
Cathy, thanks for sharing your story. Since you’re passionate about pursuing career consulting full time, and it sounds like the reason why you’re being bypassed is because you’re lacking certain qualifications, you may need to consider whether you want to keep trying with your existing credentials or if you want to go ahead and secure an additional degree or certification. From my experience, my coaching certification did not necessarily make or break me with opportunities, but it certainly seemed to check a box with corporations when I was just starting out. It sounds like you’re in a situation where you’ll need to make some tough choices about what it would really take in order for you to be credible in your desired coaching field. I actually don’t find that certifications are absolutely necessary in all cases, but they can be very helpful when you’re starting out. On the podcast, we’ll be talking about the benefits of going back to school or not, so be sure to tune into episode 5 & 6, where we’ll get into these topics.
I’m considering a career change and I am supporting a family of five with three kids under six. Do you have any suggestions or are there any episodes that address this issue?
Eric, sounds like you have your hands full! We’ve had a few episodes that have touched on the issue of how to balance your family’s needs with your own career ambitions, although I wouldn’t say the specific topic of supporting a family of five is one we’ve honed in on precisely on any episode. However, I’d encourage you to check out this episode on Living Authentically featuring former Google sales manager turned CMO David Pullara.
